What originally motivated you to try Pilates and then go on to train as an instructor?

I originally tried Pilates to rehabilitate a back injury and manage my scoliosis. I was impressed that I was stronger following rehab than I had been, and this motivated me to continue Pilates to remain strong and pain free. I am passionate about special conditions and the criticality of good posture. I wanted to share this and support and help others. It’s so motivating to share this passion with clients.

What did you eat for breakfast?

A breakfast muffin (a treat!)

In one word, describe your first Pilates teaching/apprentice teaching experience?

Motivating.

What impact has the recent COVID-19 virus had on your world?

I lived alone in the COVID-19 pandemic and was studying my Diploma. I did a LOT of mat Pilates in lock down! It was a great way to stay fit and sane.

How have you handled your Pilates teaching or training with COVID-19?

It was difficult to get some of the practical experience such as hands-on cueing and studio teaching during COVID-19, however it didn’t take long to get into the swing of things once back in the studio. Unintentionally, I think hands-off made me develop more in other areas, i.e. visual cues, and heightened my empathy. Once we were in the studio, clients were figuring out how to be in this new normal with us, so empathy and listening was really important.

What was the most unexpected part of your training?

Equipment cleaning – there was a lot of information on how to care for Pilates equipment. It was very thorough!

Your ‘go to’ website for all things Pilates (other than PAA)?

Pilates Anytime and some of my favourite instructors on Youtube, Ashley DeLeon and Brandon Perry.

The best advice you’ve ever had?

Don’t rely on willpower alone.

An indulgence you can’t live without?

Chocolate!

How long have you been a member of PAA and how did you hear about PAA?

Since June 2022, I heard about them via National Pilates Training where I completed my Diploma.

Do you have a motto?

Feel the fear and do it anyway!

What’s the most challenging aspect of learning to teach?

Figuring out what to focus on first! Clients often come in with multiple things going on, and it can take me time to figure out the most important focus. I’m still learning!

How do you use PAA?

Professional Development and Professional Development Workshops

Who is your Pilates idol or would love to meet, and why?

Ashley DeLeon – her control is amazing!

What do you appreciate most about your body?

It’s unique-ness. Scoliosis can be complicated, but its forced me to learn so much about my body and be super curious about others.
