Lanette’s second instalment of her Big apple trip

It was an intimate experience with Sally Anderson, myself and a few hundred others sitting comfortably and having a chat with Bette M; aka Sue Mengers, in her living room on stage at the Booth Theatre on Broadway last Friday evening. It was very easy to think we were being entertained by a public persona of Bette until the curtain call, when a genuinely open faced and delighted Bette thanked the audience for their participation.
The next morning we were up with our joggers on for a gym (cardio and matwork) session early and then down to Soho for another Deborah Lessen workout. We ran into another Aussie duet – Kerry and Jill from Melbourne who were also seeing Deborah and Blossom before heading for the BASI reunion the following weekend. At Deborah’s we did the gorgeous Carola Short Box Swan, Deborah’s own delicious Side Over rotation variation on the Short Box; amongst many other variations on repertoire that left us both sweaty, quivering and feeling connected but open. “It’s how you should feel at the end of a Pilates session” says Deborah – “invigorated”; and we absolutely agree.
Afterwards, because we were so energised and we were in Soho, we felt obligated to shop.
Dropping off our goodies, we grabbed a snack and headed for central park to picnic with similar numbers to the population of Wagga Wagga. Being the first day of summer and in the 30 degrees celsius, the whole of the grassy expanse throughout the park looked like the Wagga Baths in summer (sorry – it’s the only thing I can think to describe it). We ate our take out Japanese and then hired bikes to ride the Central Park main path – which was a lovely cardio workout – along with 50,000 other people. It was then home and an early evening dinner overlooking the park at Robert.
Sunday morning came and we both decided to have a Pilates and exotic food and drink free day, so we walked and then rode bikes down the west Manhattan shore of the Hudson River to Battery Point (at the bottom of Manhattan where you ferry across to the Statue of Liberty), before walking up to a street festival in lower east Manhattan, and then walking over to the Meat Packing District for a good look around. We were both very happy to say good night as the rain and then storms came rolling into the city during the evening.
The storms had well and truly settled in overnight and therefore it was a lovely wet morning as we set off, after again putting ourselves through an early morning matwork and cardio session in the gym. Travelling to Soho twice to visit particular spots, I was delighted to have affirmed that the Laundromat had indeed discovered my phone amongst my clothes – sadly though, after the wash.
Now my phone sits in a bag of rice – courtesy of my wise husband’s e-mail advice. My left calf was on ice until about half an hour ago, and I am close to bed. Tomorrow, we see Blossom for the last time, experience a matclass with Kelly Kane and prepare to say goodnight to New York whilst enjoying a dinner with Blossom. Wow – it’s been a week!
