How to Choose a Pilates Instructor Training Course

The Pilates Alliance Australasia guidelines for choosing a Pilates instructor training program are as follows.

The course provider must supply you with written information and the course content should include the following:

  • a government accredited outcome with a minimum standard of Diploma for studio instruction, or Certificate IV in a Pilates specialist qualification (not including Fitness)
  • an accredited course name and number (eg Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction 91491NSW)
  • the full Pilates system of matwork including small apparatus and larger Pilates apparatus including the reformer, trapeze table, wunda chair and barrels
  • pre-requisites required, such as pre-tertiary Anatomy & Physiology qualifications and prior Pilates experience with a minimum of 25 hours of Pilates self-mastery.

Supervised by fully qualified and registered Pilates professionals

Course structure and timeframe

The course structure should be clearly outlined, stipulating the contact hours and length of the course, including suggested time frames for work experience.

The course should also include a minimum total of 500 hours made up of the following components:

  • extensive written and practical examinations
  • lectures and practical contact components (minimum 80 hours)
  • a complete student manual containing all required repertoire
  • work experience and observation requirements to be completed under the supervision of fully qualified and registered Pilates professionals.
