For many years, the Pilates profession has relied on the instructor’s trained eye to observe movement quality, identify compensations and guide clients toward more efficient movement patterns. While technology has transformed many areas of fitness and healthcare, Pilates has remained largely dependent on human observation and expertise.
That may be about to change.
The recent emergence of smart reformers, wearable sensors and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven movement analysis tools suggests that technology is beginning to enter the Pilates space in a meaningful way. Systems that can measure spring resistance, force production, movement tempo, alignment and weight distribution are becoming increasingly sophisticated, raising an important question:
Can technology improve Pilates teaching and client outcomes, or is it simply another fitness trend?
Smart Reformers: The Next Generation of Equipment
One of the latest developments for the Pilates industry is the arrival of reformers capable of collecting and analysing movement data in real time.
The recent acquisition of Skōp by Peloton has attracted considerable attention. Skōp developed a reformer capable of tracking weight distribution, movement tempo, spring resistance and exercise execution. The system was also designed with rehabilitation applications in mind, comparing client performance against pre-determined movement standards.
While Peloton has integrated the technology into its research and development division, the concept highlights where the industry may be heading: equipment that not only facilitates movement but also provides objective performance data.
Other manufacturers have already entered this space. The NordicTrack Ultra 1 Reform RX-S incorporates sensor technology capable of tracking carriage position, power output and workout metrics through an integrated digital platform. Similarly, the Sensol reformer by Vesta Fitness replaces traditional springs with electronic resistance and provides feedback on force production, range of motion and alignment.
For Pilates instructors, these technologies offer the potential to objectively measure progress over time, monitor asymmetries and provide clients with tangible evidence of improvement.
Wearable Technology and Movement Feedback
The idea of wearable movement analysis is not new.
Several years ago, Nadi X launched their yoga leggings that incorporated motion sensors directly into the garment. These sensors detected body position and provided haptic feedback through gentle vibrations when alignment adjustments were required.
Similarly, Athos developed compression garments that utilised electromyography (EMG) technology to measure muscle activation during movement. Rather than simply tracking joint angles, Athos attempted to show which muscles were actively contributing to an exercise and whether one side of the body was working harder than the other.
Despite their innovation, wearable systems faced several barriers to widespread adoption, including high costs, specialised garment care requirements and concerns about comfort. However, they demonstrated the potential for technology to provide insights into movement patterns that were previously available only through clinical assessment.
AI and Computer Vision: A New Tool for Movement Analysis
Perhaps the most accessible technology available today is computer vision.
Rather than requiring specialised equipment or wearable sensors, computer vision systems use a smartphone or tablet camera to analyse movement. The software creates a digital representation of the body, identifying key anatomical landmarks such as the shoulders, hips, knees and ankles.
These systems can calculate joint angles, track movement pathways and identify deviations in real time.
A growing number of applications use this technology to assess posture, monitor movement quality and provide exercise feedback. Some can identify asymmetries, measure range of motion or highlight changes in alignment over time.
For Pilates instructors, this technology has potential applications in:
- Initial movement assessments
- Postural screening
- Remote and online teaching
- Progress tracking
- Rehabilitation monitoring
- Client education and engagement
The increasing accessibility of these tools means movement analysis is no longer limited to specialised laboratories or clinical environments.
What Technology Can Measure
Modern movement-tracking systems are becoming increasingly effective at collecting objective data. Depending on the platform, they can measure:
- Joint angles
- Range of motion
- Movement tempo
- Repetition counts
- Force production
- Weight distribution
- Left-right asymmetries
- Postural deviations
These measurements can provide useful benchmarks and help demonstrate client progress over time.
For instructors working in rehabilitation settings, objective data may also support communication with other healthcare professionals and assist with outcome reporting.
What Technology Cannot Yet Measure
While the capabilities of modern systems are impressive, they also have limitations.
Technology can identify that a client’s pelvis is rotating or that one leg is producing less force than the other. However, it cannot always determine why this is occurring.
Many of the qualities Pilates instructors observe every day remain difficult to quantify, including:
- Movement quality
- Breath coordination
- Motor control
- Exercise intention
- Flow and efficiency
- Client confidence
- Readiness for progression
Similarly, technology cannot replace the relationship between instructor and client or the nuanced decision-making that occurs throughout a Pilates session.
The trained observation skills of a qualified instructor remain essential for interpreting movement patterns and selecting appropriate interventions.
Looking Ahead
Technology is becoming increasingly capable of measuring how people move, from force production and range of motion to movement tempo and alignment. As these tools continue to evolve, they are likely to become more accessible within both clinical and studio environments.
For the Pilates profession, the opportunity lies not in replacing instructors but in enhancing their ability to assess, educate and monitor clients. The most effective outcomes are likely to come from combining objective data with the observational skills, clinical reasoning and movement knowledge that remain at the heart of quality Pilates instruction.
