πŸ“Œ Public Consultation – OSCA 2027 Update and PAA Submission

Introduction

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is currently undertaking a consultation on updates to the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA) β€” the framework used to define and categorise occupations across the Australian workforce.

Pilates is currently classified within the Sport and Recreation Instructor category. However, this classification may not fully reflect the range of services Pilates professionals provide, particularly in areas such as individualised programs, work with health conditions, and supervised exercise programs.

PAA Survey and Submission

The PAA will be preparing a submission to the ABS as part of this consultation process. To ensure the submission accurately reflects the breadth of Pilates practice in Australia, we are undertaking a survey of members which will be distributed by early next week. Your responses will help inform the PAA submission and contribute to a clearer understanding of the work Pilates professionals do and the skills required to deliver these services.

Below is information from the ABS with links to the relevant sections of their website. The PAA will be providing information to members on how they can add their support to the PAA submission.

Public Consultation – OSCA 2027 Update

The OSCA 2027 Update consultation is now open.

Here’s how you can provide your feedback:

  • Public consultation is now open on the ABS Consultation Hub. A feedback guide is available, outlining the simple steps to participate and provide feedback.
  • A questionnaire is now available on the ABS Consultation Hub where you can provide your feedback regarding occupation level changes to the classification.
  • Your contributions to the consultation will inform a draft classification that is scheduled to be published for feedback in August 2026, and followed by the official release of the OSCA 2027 Update in March 2027.

Feedback we are seeking
We encourage that all feedback is provided prior to 24 April, even if it is incomplete, to ensure that it is received in time for consideration.

The ABS is interested in understanding:

  • Occupations already in OSCA that are not accurately described.
  • Occupations that should be separately identified with a unique code in OSCA.

Thank you for taking the time to support the ABS in this work.
