Member Check-in: Code of Conduct
The PAA Code of Conduct is important because the Pilates profession is important. In our 2020 member survey we asked you to tell us the priorities for the PAA and the overwhelming top response was “Increasing recognition, status & credibility of the profession”. We hear this all the time from you: the frustration that the industry remains unregulated, that inadequately qualified instructors are in gyms and physiotherapy practices and that the health system does not accept our credentials. Changing this is mission critical for the PAA. Pilates should be in its rightful place as a valued movement practice taught by…
Book Review: The Memory Palace of Bones by David Lauterstein and Jeff Rockwell
The Memory Palace of Bones: Exploring Embodiment Through the Skeletal System offers a unique exploration of the anatomy of the bones of the body. This book is not a biomechanical illustration designed for purely educational purposes, but more an embodied appreciation for our bones. The authors, David Lauterstein and Jeff Rockwell both share a long career in body work and through their own professional and personal experiences take us on a descriptive journey through poetic style reflections for the role each of our bones plays in our lives both physically and energetically. The infamous Gil Hedley contributes to the foreword…

Kim Paxton, The Pilates Studio Blackwood, Adelaide, SA I’m the kind of person that checks out the Commercial Real Estate website just for fun and I can’t pass by a ‘for lease’ sign without dreaming of the possibilities of opening a studio in a new location. So about 16 months ago, when I came across a listing for a new development just a few hundred metres from my current location I jumped at the chance to learn more. The area that I live and work in, the Adelaide foothills is a beautiful area, but the commercial area is incredibly dated…
Book Review: Science of Movement, Exercise and Mental Health by Jennifer Pilotti
This book is about how movement can improve mood and self esteem generally as well as assist people manage conditions such as anxiety and depression. I’m sure this idea is not new to any of us but the book provides some pretty solid evidence, is easy to read, has a nice friendly tone and offers some handy tips. The author has academic qualifications in exercise and movement science and takes an evidence based approach to the issue, with extensive references, so the conclusions are convincing. She is not a Pilates teacher so I suspect most of us will find the…

Article: Feng Shui your Pilates Studio
Feng Shui and Pilates, a balance of body and mind During a recent trip to Singapore, I was reminded how each time I visit this orderly city it evokes a feeling of tranquility amongst the bustle – something I attribute to the Feng Shui principles that have been applied to town planning, architectural design and landscaping. Over the years, I have been privileged to visit other Eastern and South-Eastern Asian countries and continually marvel at their cultures. Their philosophies and spiritual practices are deeply rooted in a belief system that we are intrinsically connected to our environment and that this…
